Who’s There? is the first directing work from Irish writer J.M. Lane, a short horror film made with almost nothing except a small room, a phone and the idea that sometimes what you cannot see is far worse than what you can.

Running at under four minutes, the film follows a terrified man who rushes into a confined room and hides from something outside. The camera never moves. Whatever is hunting him remains largely unseen, and as the film develops another possibility begins to creep in: perhaps the thing he should be frightened of is not outside the room at all.

Lane made the film alone, working as writer, director and performer, using the limitations of a tiny space as part of the story rather than something to work around.

Since its completion, Who’s There? has received three official festival selections and two nominations, an unexpected beginning for what started as a tiny, zero-budget experiment in horror filmmaking.

Among its festival appearances is the WOLF Media Festival 2027, held in Melbourne, Florida, while the film has also been officially selected for the Athvikvaruni International Film Festival 2026, held at Raviprasad Film Labs in Chennai, India.

For a film made alone in a room in the northwest of Ireland, it is already travelling considerably farther than its creator did while making it.

The festival run marks Lane’s first move from writing stories on the page to telling them through film, but the approach remains much the same: keep the story small, let the audience imagine the worst, and never show them quite enough to feel comfortable.

Who’s There? is currently continuing its international festival run.
